REFUGE is a cross-continental storytelling exhange that engages ethnography, documentary and verbatim theatre to tell the stories of asylum seekers and immigrants living in two cities more than 10 000km apart.
Using testimonies and interviews, this new play aims to find connections between the stories of African asylum seekers in the UK and SA. Stories of people who live on the fringes of cities or under the radar, who inspire irrational fear or are barely seen, who have journeyed across one continent or many in search of a new home. Refugees have become part of the modern, cosmopolitan urban landscape. But who are 'those' people? How did they get here? What were they seeking refuge from?
